WELCOME TO LEARNING TO LEAD

david

Hi, my name is David Clarkson, the tutor for the course. I teach in Tilsley College and have been an elder for some thirty years in two churches, one in the south of Scotland and the other in Glasgow. I have been involved in leadership training for over 20 years both in a secular (senior managers and headteachers in secondary schools) and Christian (local church and Tilsley College) context.

This course recognises that all of us are leaders or followers in one context or another. We are leaders as parents, teachers, children’s or youth leader, bible study or outreach leader. We are followers when we recognise the position or expertise of another. We may be the leader in one area of ministry and a follower in another. We need to learn to do both well.

The course also recognises that leadership takes place at all levels in a church or organisation. So the material is not simply directed at elders but at any individual, whether old or young, male or female, who has responsibility for others.  Our desire is to encourage existing leaders, inspire emerging leaders and help create the climate where  leadership training is the norm in churches.

Let me give you some background information to the course so that you will know what is involved.

Aims of the course

ltl
  1. To help participants identify the leadership principles contained in the Bible
  2. To help participants identify their own leadership styles and use them effectively in the service of God.
  3. To help participants understand and apply the principles so that they will be better able to lead others in their various ministries.

Using the Course

The course runs from February to November each year and is constructed on a modular basis so it is possible to join at any point and, if your personal circumstances become difficult, you can miss a module and catch up later.

There are eight modules each taking four or five weeks to work through with a short break between each module. The breaks will allow time to catch up or do additional reading.

The course work will be posted on the internet at the beginning of each module. A commitment of around two hours per week will enable you to undertake the assignments but additional reading will be recommended from time to time which, if you can manage it, will bring a wider perspective to your thinking.
