Who is the course for?
Biblical Leadership is for everyone interested in leadership development - young or old, male or female, experienced or inexperienced.

Leaders of long standing have found the course a very helpful reminder of basic principles. Potential leaders have valued the opportunity to be introduced to the range and complexity of leadership issues.

We recognise that many ladies are heavily committed to the leadership of ministries both within and outside the church. Biblical Leadership seeks to encourage such women to develop their leadership skills so that these ministries can continue to grow and flourish. A lady on a recent course said, "This has been one of the most significant experiences of my life."

Biblical Leadership has also benefited people who are not leaders. They have become more aware of the problems and pressures leaders face and have learned how to be much more supportive of leaders.

Is Biblical Leadership only available via the tutor led course?

Biblical Leadership can be used in different contexts.

1. By Individuals. Individual students can benefit by working through the exercises. We recommend, however, that each student finds a mentor to discuss responses to questions or issues raised. This will be of much greater benefit than working alone.

2. By Churches. A church or group of churches can identify students and mentors who could work through the materials over several seminar sessions. Tilsley College would be happy to provide a trainer to lead the group through the course.

What is the thinking behind this course?

We believe there are three basic elements in leadership development - knowledge, character and skill. It is important that the student develop in each of these areas each year. Our understanding is that this kind of development is life-long.

By KNOWLEDGE we mean that the student should be aiming to acquire an understanding of:

A general overview of the history of the Old Testament and New Testament
The main themes of the Bible
The history and practices of our local churches
How to share and defend the faith
People and how they tick
Teams and how they work

By CHARACTER we mean that the student's growing knowledge of the Scriptures should impact on his or her life to produce a growth in godliness. The following could be some of the outcomes:

Mind and heart set on glory of God
Student of the Bible and theology
Growing in maturity and holiness, diligent in prayer
Characterised by humility, integrity, reliability, teachability
Committed to the service of others

By SKILLS we mean some of the following:

Ability to participate in church meetings e.g. worship, prayer, Bible study
Ability to maintain spiritual self discipline and motivation
Ability to communicate effectively and motivate others
Ability to work with/build a team
Ability to manage change and handle conflict

This model is shown diagrammatically below:

What other resources will be needed?

No additional materials are required. The course contains everything you need.

However, each unit recommends some books you might find helpful. We would encourage you to read any book, watch any video, attend any seminar on leadership either secular or religious to which you may have access. It is important to keep on learning and draw on leadership experience from any source.

Should you find it difficult to acquire some of the recommended books, our bookshop at GLO will be happy to help. You can contact the bookshop at:

What about copyright and costs?
