DISTANCE LEARNING
We are all familiar with the traditional classroom situation where students are in direct contact with the teacher.
Distance learning is a term used to describe an educational context where teacher and student are separated from one another. Correspondence courses are early examples of distance learning. More modern approaches make use of correspondence, telephone, radio, video and computer conferencing and the internet.
Courses are provided from a central institution and students can be any where in the world.
What are the advantages of distance learning?
Convenience. You can take courses in the comfort of your own home.
Flexibility. You may not be able or do not wish to go to College. Distance learning will allow you to take courses when it is convenient for you and allow you to set your own pace.
Continuity. You do not need to give up a job or take leave of absence. For those in Christian ministry it means you can continue with the work and increase your knowledge at the same time.
Enrichment. Classes are made up of a wide diversity of often older, highly motivated students from many walks of life in many parts of the world. Tutor led courses via the internet also help to create a fellowship within the group.
Expense. Course costs are not as high and you do not need to find accommodation away from home.

Is distance learning right for me?
Learning on your own requires a high degree of commitment. There are often competing demands from family, friends or work. Studying part time also takes longer than studying full time. However, it must also be said that there is a huge amount of satisfaction in completing a course and seeing the study through to completion.
If you can answer "yes" to the following statements, distance learning may be the right approach for you:
1. I am a self-starter with good personal motivation.
2. I enjoy working on my own.
3. I can work under pressure and am not easily distracted.
4. I don't need someone to guide me through every stage.
5. I feel comfortable with computers.
6. When I start something I usually finish it.
With regard to any particular course you need to feel that the course will be of benefit to you and you would really enjoy taking it. You also need to be sure you can allocate sufficient time to complete it.
